Stop accidental purchases on Fire TV
A PIN makes the TV ask for a number before anyone can buy a movie, a channel, or an app. It takes about 5 minutes.
You need: the Fire TV remote and the Amazon account password (to create the PIN the first time).
Turn on the purchase PIN
- Press the Home button on the remote.
- Go to Settings (the gear icon).
- Choose Preferences, then Parental Controls.
- Choose Parental Controls to turn it ON. Enter your PIN, or create one if asked.
- Turn ON the option that PIN-protects purchases. If you like, also PIN-protect app launches. (Option names vary a little by model.)
Now the TV asks for the PIN before buying anything through your Amazon account.
What the PIN may not stop
- Subscriptions inside other apps. If an app (a streaming service) has its own card on file, a purchase inside that app may skip the Fire TV PIN. Check each service's own settings.
- Channel free trials. Some Fire TV owners report free trials of Prime Video channels starting without the PIN (user reports, not an Amazon statement). Check your Amazon account's Memberships & Subscriptions page once a month.
Write the PIN down
Keep the PIN somewhere safe away from the TV, so the person who handles the account can find it. Don't tape it to the remote.
